Upcoming Valley Festival Singers Concert

Songs of Strength and Beauty

Although she was a much-praised and highly accomplished musician with more than 450 compositions to her name, it’s possible that you’ve never heard of Fanny Hensel. You might recognize her brother’s name: Felix Mendelssohn. Her lack of recognition speaks more to the times in which she lived than her talents and yet Fanny Hensel is only one of many female composers who would never achieve the acclaim that their male counterparts did.
So when selecting music for the Valley Festival Singers’ spring concert, conductor Joel Tranquilla chose to highlight music that would draw attention to the wealth of contributions made by females. Songs of Strength and Beauty is a special concert program for the Mother’s Day weekend that will feature music for, by and about women. Along with music by Fanny Hensel, the concert will also include works by Nancy Telfer, Sarah Quartel, Joan Szymko and others.
The concert is set for the Mother’s Day weekend but it will speak to a broader narrative than motherhood. Works from Purcell, Handel and Schubert focus on poetry by and stories about women. The concert also reflects a wide variety of styles with music from Africa, poetry from Japan and an arrangement by Tranquilla of Leonard Cohen’s Bernadette.

Mystery and intrigue surround six strangers stranded at an English boarding house during a snow storm when one among them is murdered. The suspects include the newly married couple running the guest house, a spinster with an obscure background, an architect more suited to be chef, a retired Army major, and an unexpected arrival whose car has overturned in the snow. The job of solving the murder falls to a policeman, who’s investigation rattles nerves and shakes many a skeleton in the closet. Agatha Christie’s most famous and riveting thriller will leave you guessing until the very end!
